Communication Skills in Service

I am putting together a service training program for a client and communication skills have come up as a very important topic given the current organization's culture. Does anybody know where I could get information regarding the importance of communication in service, attributes of effective communication, do's and dont's, exercises, etc. Do you know any book that covers these issues?
