Senator Calls for Tax on Call Center Offshoring

1st June 2010

USA - Proposed tax on US companies that are "offshoring"

New York Senator Charles Schumer is pushing for a tax on organizations that outsource their call center operations overseas.

The proposal is an attempt halt the flow of American customer contact jobs going to countries such as India, the Philippines, Indonesia,, South Africa, and Ireland.

Schumer also proposes that companies tell their customers which country their calls are being diverted to.

Senator Schumer said:

“This bill will not only serve to maintain call center jobs currently in the United States, but also provide a reason for companies that have already outsourced jobs to bring them back.”
