Indian Call Centre Workers Suffer Verbal Abuse

CSM News, 24th February 2006

Reports from India reveal that call centre staff continue to be subject to verbal abuse by overseas callers.

In some cases customers refuse to deal with the call centre employee when they find out they are working in an Indian call centre. Others say they have been verbally abused and accused of taking jobs from Europe or the US.

Many Indian call centre workers who find it hard to deal with the abuse leave the job.

It is accepted that irate and rude customers are nothing new, but it is the racial overtones that are shocking the young and eager call centre professionals in India's Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) industry.

An organization called The Young Professionals Collective has asked the Indian labour ministry to look into the complaints of racial abuses on India's call centre workforce.
